Louis Schleifer was a classmate of Nat Bodian at Monmouth Street School and from high school 1 he enlisted in the Army. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 and was the first Newarker killed in the Pearl Harbor attack. Schleifer Memorial Park on Elizabeth Avenue, Newark, is named in memory of him.

The monument stone honoring Louis Schleifer is currently in the courtyard of Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston. It was moved there for safe keeping. Annually, on Memorial Day, a short service is held there.
